Maxzide
Generic name: triamterene/hydrochlorothiazide
What is this medication?
Maxzide is a combination of two diuretics (water pills) used in the treatment of high blood pressure and other conditions that require the elimination of excess fluid from the body.
What is the most important information I should know about this medication?
If you have high blood pressure, you must take Maxzide regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may be several weeks before you get the full benefit of Maxzide; you must continue taking it even if you are feeling well. Maxzide does not cure high blood pressure; it merely keeps it under control.
Abnormal elevations of potassium in your blood can occur with Maxzide. This is more likely to occur if you are elderly, severely ill, or have kidney problems or diabetes. Some warning signs include: fatigue, muscular weakness, numbness or tingling, paralysis of the hands or feet, and slow heart rate. Be sure to follow up with your doctor regularly to monitor your blood potassium level.
In general, Maxzide may cause imbalances in blood electrolyte levels. Warning signs and symptoms of fluid and electrolyte imbalance include: decreased production of urine, drowsiness, dry mouth, fast heart rate, fatigue, low blood pressure, muscular fatigue, muscle pain or cramps, restlessness, stomach disturbances, thirst, or weakness. Stop taking Maxzide and speak to your doctor if you are experiencing any of these symptoms. Be sure to follow up with your doctor regularly to monitor your electrolytes.
Who should not take this medication?
You should not take Maxzide if you are unable to urinate, or if you have any serious kidney disease, high potassium levels in your blood, or if you are taking other drugs that prevent the loss of potassium.
If you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to triamterene, hydrochlorothiazide, or sulfa drugs, you should not take this medication.
What should I tell my doctor before I take the first dose of this medication?
Tell your doctor about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking before beginning treatment with this drug. Also, talk to your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have a history of any of the following: asthma, diabetes, gout (severe and painful inflammation of the joints), kidney disease, kidney stones, liver disease, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, or heart failure.
What is the usual dosage?
The information below is based on the dosage guidelines your doctor uses. Depending on your condition and medical history, your doctor may prescribe a different regimen. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your doctor’s approval.
Adults: The usual dose is one tablet daily. If you have already been taking hydrochlorothiazide, your doctor will determine the appropriate dose for you.
How should I take this medication?
Maxzide should be taken early in the day. To avoid stomach upset, take Maxzide with food.
What should I avoid while taking this medication?
When taking Maxzide, do not use potassium-containing salt substitutes. Take potassium supplements only if specifically directed to by your doctor. Your potassium level should be checked frequently.
